About the Event
In this first of two talks, ecologist Pete Yeo will explore how climate change is impacting our flora, both wild and cultivated. Pete describes himself as a Reconciliation Ecologist and Nature Mentor, and hosts the Facebook group Future Flora, developing perspectives on the plant realm that go deeper than conventional views.
Our flora will witness significant change in the coming decades, due to changing climate and the associated migration of species, plus an increasingly globalised world and rising developmental pressures. Pete is seeking to expand public dialogue on these issues.
"We will all benefit from a greater understanding of how best to adapt to inevitable ecological change ... The 'New Wild' (to borrow from science writer Fred Pearce) is here, yet merely continues processes that have always been at play on Earth, albeit accelerated greatly by modern human activity."
This talk will be followed up by a second one at our event in Woodbury Village Hall on Sat 23 Nov. The subject then will be One Person's Weed is another's Wisdom - asking, "Might a more holistic view of vegetation and the biosphere be more helpful? Is it possible that what many know as 'invasives' are also Gaia's immune response to disturbance within her green mantle - one being's weed, another's wisdom?"
